AAPI Heritage Month
< News & Updates

All Month

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, celebrated every May, has its roots in a 1977 congressional bill introduced to honor the contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans to U.S. history. The month of May was chosen deliberately — it marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, a monumental achievement built largely on the labor of Chinese immigrants. What began as a single week of recognition was expanded to a full month in 1992, acknowledging the vast and diverse cultures, histories, and experiences of one of the fastest-growing communities in the country.

New York City, home to one of the largest and most diverse AAPI populations in the nation, marks the month with an extraordinary range of events and celebrations. The 5th annual NYC AAPI Heritage parade will take place on May 17 from 12:00 - 3:00pm in midtown. Neighborhoods like Flushing in Queens, Chinatown and Little Korea in Manhattan, and Little Bangladesh in the Bronx host cultural festivals, art installations, film screenings, and community gatherings that highlight the depth of AAPI heritage. Organizations such as the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) and various South and Southeast Asian cultural centers offer special programming throughout May. New Yorkers are also encouraged to support AAPI-owned businesses, attend performances of traditional and contemporary AAPI art forms, and engage with local advocacy groups working to amplify AAPI voices in the city's civic life.

For anyone interested in creating an ERG related to AAPI heritage, please read through our DEI Programming page for more info and use this form to apply!

Mental Health Awareness Month
< News & Updates

All Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an observance that has been recognized in the United States since 1949. Founded by Mental Health America, this month highlights the importance of education and public awareness around mental illness — including depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder — conditions that affect 18.1% of Americans.

A central goal of the month is to reduce the stigma faced by individuals living with mental health conditions, normalize their experiences and needs, and connect people with the resources available to help themselves or anyone they know who may be struggling.

Throughout May, you may see people wearing a green ribbon, which symbolizes hope, strength, and emotional support for those affected by mental illness.

This is also a great time to support organizations doing meaningful work in this space. In NYC, a few worth highlighting:

Need Help? You're Not Alone.

If you or someone you know is struggling, free and confidential support is available 24/7:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
  • NAMI Helpline: 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) | nami.org
  • Mental Health America: mhanational.org

Reaching out is a sign of strength — help is always within reach.

Cinco de Mayo
< News & Updates

May 5th

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day — it commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Outnumbered and undersupplied, General Ignacio Zaragoza led his troops to a surprising defeat of the French, who were considered one of the most powerful militaries in the world at the time. While the victory was short-lived — France ultimately occupied Mexico the following year — the battle became a powerful symbol of Mexican resilience and national pride. The holiday is actually observed more modestly in Mexico itself, primarily in the state of Puebla, but grew into a much larger cultural celebration in the United States, particularly as a way for Mexican-Americans to honor their heritage.

In New York City, Cinco de Mayo has become a vibrant community celebration embraced across all five boroughs. Neighborhoods like Jackson Heights in Queens and the South Bronx come alive with street festivals, live mariachi music, folklórico dance performances, and food vendors serving traditional dishes like tamales, elote, and mole. Local restaurants and bars host festive events, and many cultural organizations use the day as an opportunity to spotlight Mexican art, history, and community contributions. For New Yorkers, it's a chance to celebrate the rich Mexican and Latin culture that has long been woven into the fabric of the city - and maybe share margaritas with friends.

Memorial Day
< News & Updates

May 25, 2026

Observed annually on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is a time of reflection dedicated to honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as “Decoration Day”, the tradition began following the Civil War as communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. While its official birthplace is recognized as Waterloo, New York, early observances across the country—including a significant ceremony organized by formerly enslaved people in Charleston in 1865—laid the groundwork for what would become a federal holiday in 1971. Today, the day serves as a reminder of the cost of our freedoms and a time to offer gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

For those spending the holiday in New York City, there are several meaningful ways to pay your respects and participate in community traditions. You can attend the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade in Bay Ridge—one of the oldest continuously held parades in the country—which concludes with a moving wreath-laying ceremony and a 21-gun salute at John Paul Jones Park. In Manhattan, the Intrepid Museum hosts a powerful annual ceremony on Pier 86 featuring the playing of Taps and a flyover by Navy fighter jets. Regardless of how you celebrate, we hope you have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend!

Mother’s Day
< News & Updates

May 10, 2026

Mother’s Day as we know it today was largely established through the efforts of West Virginia-native, Anna Jarvis. She organized the first official observance in 1908 to honor her mother’s lifelong activism and commitment to empowering other women & mothers. The modern American holiday was officially recognized by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Beyond the cards and flowers, the day serves as a poignant reminder of the strength, resilience, and leadership of mothers and mother-figures who nurture our families and communities. It is a time to reflect on their contributions and celebrate the impact they have on our lives.

If you are looking to celebrate right here in the city, New York offers an array of beautiful ways to show your appreciation. You can book a scenic Mother's Day brunch cruise along the Hudson to take in the stunning skyline views, or, for a more relaxed pace, go for a walk through the High Line in full spring bloom. However you decide to celebrate, remember that the most meaningful gifts often don't require a reservation; simply spending quality time is a great way to honor the mothers and mother-figures who mean so much to us.

Aries

03.12 - 04.19

The first half of the month pushes you toward independence, Aries. You’ll be releasing aspects of your life that have been too co-dependent, which may make you feel uncomfortable. It’s tempting to lean on someone else, but this is a time for you to stand on your own two feet. The more self-reliant you become, the more you’ll discover your strengths and come up with creative ways to build your material and inner worth. By mid-month, you’ll settle into your new role and start making clear decisions on how to move forward. You’ll feel more comfortable connecting with others, not just for help, but to show how self-sufficient you’ve become. It’s a great time to exchange ideas. Mars in Taurus is helping you slow down and focus, so take time to appreciate the people who matter most in your life. By the end of the month, you’ll be more social and comfortable in your skin, confidently sharing your bold ideas. Don’t shy away from standing tall on what you believe. This is a great time to let go of inherited ideas and trust your own wisdom.

Taurus

04.20 - 05.20

At the start of the month, you may be reviewing an important relationship or partnership. You’ll feel a need to release something in order to focus on yourself. Mercury in your sign has been pushing you to self-improve, likely due to pressure from important people in your life. But, as Mercury cazimi offers clarity, you’ll begin to wonder if these changes are what you truly want. Mid-month brings a new moon in your sign, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter. Expect surprises – hopefully birthday-related! Mercury shifts to Gemini, making you more aware of your financial situation, while Mars enters Taurus, firing up your passion. However, be cautious with authority figures or work situations that may provoke irritation. As the month goes on, balancing your desires with financial stability becomes easier. By the end of the month, you’ll find ways to manage your spending, leading to more financial independence than you expected. Congrats!

Gemini

05.21 - 06.20

Happy birthday, Gemini! With your season beginning on 21 May, you’ll find yourself more social and unapologetically yourself. You may celebrate in a unique way, and by the end of the month, you may feel a deep sense of responsibility to take your relationships to the next level. Mid-month, Mercury enters your sign, prompting you to focus on your sense of self-worth. The self-improvement work you’ve been doing won’t be obvious to others, but you’ll start reaping the rewards in the second half of the month. You may also notice a costly habit you want to break. Though you’re eager to let it go, you’ll realise how deeply embedded it is in your psyche. This internal struggle makes you question how your personal worldview supports your empowerment. You might isolate yourself to reflect, but in doing so, you’ll come up with some brilliant ideas. Trust the process.

Cancer

06.21 - 07.22

Feeling a little bit ‘meh’ right now? You may feel disconnected from parts of yourself you once identified with. As a result, you’ll start looking for new people or activities to fill the void. While the connections are fun, they may feel too intense or move too fast. Don’t worry – this feeling will pass as you find ways to slow things down to your comfort level. When you feel more settled, you’ll be inspired to focus on long-term goals. You may isolate yourself to work on these ambitions, and your friends will likely notice the shift. Fortunately, Venus in your sign makes it easier for you to convince others to support you. By month’s end, you’ll feel OK with putting most of your energy into your own growth. This may mean more time alone to let your unique ideas flow. Solitude will also help you recognise patterns in your behaviour that you’d like to change. The full moon in Sagittarius is an ideal time to work on those.

Leo

07.23 08.22

You may feel like you’re being pulled in all directions this month, Leo, balancing personal life with career responsibilities. You’ve been focused on family and home but now feel pulled towards your work. You may have an important meeting or project to manage or a partnership may challenge your authority, causing you to question if you’ve been disempowered. New opportunities arise to share your ideas and creativity, particularly with influential people. You’ll be eager to dive in, but remember to pace yourself and assess your limits. Taking time for introspection could help stabilise your energy before all the work ahead. By the end of the month, you’ll feel more confident in putting yourself out there. You may enjoy time with family and friends or explore new, unconventional interests. Whatever you try, it’s a great opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and embrace new experiences.

Virgo

08.23 - 09.22

At the start of the month, you’re searching for answers. If the world around you isn’t providing them, you’ll turn inward – books, travel or new learning experiences may help you find clarity. You’ll come to the conclusion that it’s time to change your routines and cut out bad habits. This change will be crucial in shifting your mindset. Mid-month brings a ‘eureka’ moment, where you’ll gain a fresh perspective on your life’s direction. This will fuel your motivation to take on new tasks, responsibilities and opportunities. You’ll show everyone you can walk the walk, not just talk the talk. This energy will attract new people to your circle. As the month wraps up, expect attention at work. It’s a good time to showcase your ideas to people in positions of power. Your focus has been on self-improvement, but now you’re turning towards how you present yourself to the world.

Libra

09.23 - 10.22

Libra, you may find yourself needing support this month, whether financial or emotional. Although this moment of vulnerability may make you uncomfortable, it’s OK to lean on others. Over time, you’ll start to feel more comfortable with reciprocity. You’ll recognise the importance of healing, especially around past emotional wounds. As you release this baggage, your presence will become more magnetic, especially at work, where others will seek your perspective and advice. By the end of the month, you may crave a holiday to experience a new environment. The change in scenery could provide relaxation and inspiration, especially as you gain new insights from different cultures and perspectives. These revelations will be valuable for your personal growth moving forward.

Scorpio

10.23 - 11.21

The full moon in your sign kicks off the month, intensifying your emotions. You’ll uncover aspects of yourself through your partnerships, which may lead to some tough realisations. Conversations with trusted people will help you dig deep into your past and see how these patterns have shaped you. A new moon in Taurus will bring renewal to your relationships. This is a good time to assess which ones are worth keeping and which need to be let go. You might even feel a surge of intimacy with someone special as you grow to be more vulnerable and open. By the end of the month, the vulnerability you’ve experienced will ignite a desire for deeper emotional connections and transformation. You’ll seek new ways to evolve within your relationships – you’re ready for a major shift.

Sagittarius

11.22 - 12.21

At the start of the month, personal triggers around emotional vulnerability may surface for you, Sagittarius. You’ll feel conflicted between practical steps to address these triggers and a desire to stay emotionally detached. Luckily, Mercury cazimi will offer fresh ideas to break through this internal barrier. As the month progresses, you’ll find ways to address these vulnerabilities with the help of trusted people. Mars in Taurus will make it easier to stick to these changes, bringing a sense of peace and emotional openness. By the end of the month, you’ll see the people who have truly supported you. Their loyalty may spark a deeper connection, either emotional or romantic. The full moon on 31 May will only motivate you to embrace change and commit to the emotional growth you’ve been working on.

Capricorn

12.22 - 01.19

It might be a slightly tough start to the month for you, Capricorn. You may begin questioning long-term goals that no longer feel aligned with your desires. The full moon in Scorpio helps you release these aspirations, but you’ll still wonder where to go from here. Fortunately, Mercury cazimi will inspire a practical way forward. Later in the month, a shift in mindset will allow you to find joy in your daily life, even as you balance responsibilities. This will also create room for romance, and you may find yourself more open to fun surprises. Just be careful not to get too carried away; you’ll need to balance work with play. The full moon in Sagittarius will remind you to reconnect with your inner spirit and let go of the fear that has kept you in your comfort zone.

Aquarius

01.20 - 02.18

Aquarius, you’ve been focused on career and work changes, but your home life and emotions may have suffered as a result. This imbalance could create friction at home, but communicating your feelings will help you navigate this challenge. With Pluto retrograde in your sign, you’ll uncover ways you’ve been giving away your power. Mid-month brings unexpected change at home, but this may spark freedom to enjoy life more and explore your romantic side. Finding balance between joy and responsibilities will be crucial. By the end of the month, the weight of home life will ease, and you’ll focus on self-care and recreation. New creative ideas could come to the surface, leading to both professional and personal breakthroughs.

Pisces

02.19 - 03.20

You may start to feel like your beliefs and perspectives may no longer align with your current path. This realisation will help you recognise how the worldviews of others have influenced you. Mercury cazimi will give you clarity on your personal wisdom, helping you step into your own truth, so embrace it. Later in the month, you will be more in flow with your own wisdom, settling in with confidence and pride. Believe it or not, this opens you up to understanding your emotions, as well as your family dynamics and how they have shaped you into the person you are today. Your conviction will be strong and sound, so just be mindful of this. By the month’s end, you will have more focus on your family and home life. Some surprises may show up that lead you to greater responsibilities – just make sure you remain balanced. Your creative and innovative juices will be flowing, and instead of you pouring them only into your career, you will be pouring that energy into where you feel it is most important: you and your loved ones.
