Celebrating Heritage

Celebrated in August: Honoring Heritage, History, and Community in New York City

‍Rwandan Thanksgiving

Umuganura, Rwanda's National Harvest Day, is a vibrant and deeply significant celebration observed annually on the first Friday of August. This traditional festival is a time for Rwandans to express gratitude for a bountiful harvest and to reflect on the nation's progress and unity.

Celebrations typically involve families and communities coming together to share food and drinks, often featuring traditional dishes made from the harvest. There are also cultural performances, including singing, dancing, and storytelling, that showcase Rwanda's rich heritage. Umuganura is important not only as a thanksgiving for agricultural abundance but also as a powerful symbol of national cohesion, resilience, and the spirit of working together for a prosperous future. It's a day that reinforces community bonds and celebrates the collective achievements of the Rwandan people.

West Indian Day Parade

As everyone prepares to close out summer over Labor day weekend, the Caribbean diaspora across New York is preparing for something completely different. The largest parade in the city, the West Indian Day Parade, brings four million people from across the world to Brooklyn to celebrate Caribbean heritage through a Carnival-esque Parade.

Carnival is an annual event observed across Caribbean nations. It is a pre-lenten celebration full of traditional festivities, colourful costumes and vibrant music. Since the first festival occurred in Trinidad and Tobago in 1834, it has been a key cultural event for the West Indian community. Heavily influenced by the Fat Tuesday masquerade brought to the island by French Settlers, the enslaved community used carnival as a time to express their freedom through music, clothing, and dance, leading to the dynamic fusion of African influences and Creole culture.

In New York however, the first parade can be traced back to the 1930s up in Harlem, introduced to the city by Trinidadian Immigrant Jessie Waddell. The event originally took place in the winter, pre-lent as it is commonly celebrated on most Caribbean islands, so it was indoors which limited the experience of the event. To capture the true essence of Carnival, the Trinidad Carnival Pageant Committee was formed and they proposed moving the parade to the streets during a warmer time in the city.

After the permit was revoked in 1664, Carlos Lezama founded the West Indian-American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) in 1969. They proposed a parade along the Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, which is the celebration we know today. This is not the only Carnival related celebration occurring at this time, there are several events leading up to the parade. Notably there is a Junior Carnival parade for children to participate in the festivities, Panorama the time where steelpan bands go head to head in a musical battle and Dimache Gras where traditional Carnival characters perform. WIADCA is also a community resource, hosting volunteer events, youth and scholarship programs for the Caribbean Diaspora.

Labor Day

The United States has a proud and resilient history when it comes to workers’ rights, with passionate voices and courageous communities coming together to drive meaningful change, even in the face of adversity. Labor Day stands as a testament to that spirit.

Originally envisioned to celebrate “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations,” Labor Day began as a day for the working people of New York City to unite in recognition of their contributions. The first Labor Day parade, held in September 1882 by the city’s Central Labor Union, drew an astonishing 20,000–25,000 participants, showing the power of solidarity and community. The movement quickly gained momentum, with New York and Oregon making Labor Day a state holiday by 1885, and in 1894, it became a federal holiday after President Cleveland called federal troops in to end the Pullman Strike in Chicago, killing a number of strikers. Congress rushed to pass the bill right after, to keep tensions from rising. While fraught and hard-won, workers across the US demonstrated once again how collective action can create lasting change.

As we celebrate Labor Day, let’s remember that many of those honored by this holiday are actually hard at work - keeping restaurants running, delivering goods, managing retail floors, and supporting communities in countless ways. The holiday was established to recognize their dedication and to affirm their rights, yet most wage and service workers do not get the day off and continue working, often behind the scenes. By honoring their contributions and acknowledging the ongoing efforts, sometimes by working on Labor Day itself, we recommit ourselves to the ongoing journey of valuing and uplifting every worker, ensuring that the promise of Labor Day truly reaches everyone.
