Nomad October Newsletter

As we move into autumn, this month’s celebrations remind us of the power of culture, community, and connection in shaping our shared story. From Hispanic Heritage Month to Diwali, Día de los Muertos, and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we celebrate traditions that brighten our city and inspire reflection. October has also brought new chances to gather at Nomad as we’ve painted pumpkins, competed in olympic games, or cowboy and caviar’d at our anniversary party. Let’s take this season to honor heritage, embrace light, and continue building community at Nomad.
Celebrating Heritage

Celebrated in October: Honoring Heritage, History, and Community in New York City

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 - October 15, Annually

‍

Every year from September 15 to October 15, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose family roots trace to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. What began as a small, week-long observance in 1968 grew into a full month by 1988, recognizing the growing impact and diversity of Hispanic communities nationwide.

The timing of the celebration has significance across several Central and South American countries. Every year on September 15th, five nations–Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua–mark their independence, followed closely by Mexico and Chile. Together, these anniversaries reflect a shared spirit of resilience, freedom, and pride that continues to define communities across the Americas.

“Hispanic” is a word that carries languages, songs, and family traditions from around the world. It represents stories passed through generations, of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Salvadoran, and many other heritages. Rather than referring to a single race or country, it speaks to the shared threads of culture and connection that bind millions of people together through language, food, music, and memory.

‍

The history of Hispanic Americans is filled with leaders, artists, and change-makers who have shaped the nation. Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta fought for farm workers’ rights. Rita Moreno brought visibility and excellence to entertainment, while Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of In the Heights and Hamilton, redefined American theater by centering immigrant stories and celebrating Latin culture on the global stage. In history, figures like Miguel Hidalgo of Mexico inspired movements for independence that changed entire regions.

‍

In New York City, this heritage is woven into everyday life: from El Barrio in East Harlem and Washington Heights in Manhattan to the lively communities of Corona, the South Bronx, and Jackson Heights. For more than a century, these neighborhoods have celebrated food, art, and music that reflect the strength and creativity of Hispanic New Yorkers.

‍

Each year, cities across the country celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with music, dance, art, and storytelling. It’s a time for families to share traditions, honor their heritage, and celebrate the future being built today. In New York alone, nearly 2.5 million residents, and almost 29% of women in the city, identify as Hispanic or Latina and continue to shape our culture, economy, and spirit.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Monday, October 13, 2026

‍

Indigenous Peoples' Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States that honors the history, culture, and contributions of Native American people. It is observed annually on the second Monday of October, the same day as the federal holiday of Columbus Day. The holiday represents a move to acknowledge the complex history of the Americas, recognizing indigenous populations and celebrating their resilience and ongoing impact. This day is important as it offers an opportunity for reflection and education, promoting a greater understanding of indigenous sovereignty and cultural preservation within the broader community.

Autumn Across Cultures

‍

Autumn carries a quiet magic, a season of shifting light, renewal, and reflection. As we move from the warmth of summer to the calm (and chill) of winter, this time of year connects communities across the world through celebrations of gratitude, remembrance, and light. From Asia to the Americas, fall traditions embrace the balance between change and continuity, and the warmth we hold onto as the world grows cooler.

‍

The Mid-Autumn Festival (took place Monday, October 6), also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most cherished celebrations across East and Southeast Asia. With roots stretching back over 3,000 years, it began as a harvest festival tied to moon worship and gratitude for abundance. Today, it remains a time to appreciate family unity, with families gathering under the full moon to share mooncakes, round pastries symbolizing wholeness, luck, and connection, and light lanterns that illuminate the night sky in every color imaginable. In China, it is a moment for storytelling, often recalling the legend of Chang’e, the moon goddess who represents eternal love and reunion. In Vietnam, children parade with star-shaped lanterns as part of Tết Trung Thu, while in Korea, families celebrate Chuseok, a parallel festival of harvest and remembrance. Across continents, the Mid-Autumn Festival invites reflection on harmony, gratitude, and the shared beauty of the moon that connects us all. Read more about the history of the Mid-Autumn Festival here.

‍

Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights (started on Monday, October 20), illuminates India and the global South Asian diaspora with joy, devotion, and community. Spanning five days, the festival begins with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj, each day symbolizing prosperity, renewal, and connection. The main celebration, Lakshmi Puja, honors the goddess Lakshmi and the triumph of good over evil through Lord Rama’s return from exile. Homes fill with the glow of clay lamps called diyas, while families create intricate rangoli designs, share sweets, and exchange blessings. For Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Newar Buddhists alike, Diwali carries both spiritual and cultural significance, representing the eternal hope that light, wisdom, and goodness can always overcome darkness. Whether observed in a temple in Delhi, a market in Singapore, or a home in New York, Diwali reflects the unity of human joy and renewal as one year gives way to the next. Read more about Diwali here.

‍

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead (taking place Saturday, November 1 - Sunday, November 2), is a deeply meaningful Mexican celebration that honors loved ones who have passed, blending Indigenous Mesoamerican beliefs with Spanish Catholic traditions. Rooted in pre-Columbian rituals dedicated to Mictēcacihuātl, the Lady of the Dead, the holiday was aligned with All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days to create a vivid commemoration of life’s continuity. Families craft ofrendas, beautiful home altars adorned with marigolds, candles, sugar skulls, and photos, to guide the spirits of ancestors back home. In villages and cities alike, people gather in cemeteries to clean graves, share food, and sing through the night, celebrating the sacred connection between the living and the departed. Across Mexico and Latin America, this fusion of ancient and colonial tradition reflects a worldview where death is not an end, but a shared space of memory, love, and presence. Día de los Muertos reminds us that remembrance itself is a form of life and that honoring those before us keeps their light alive. Read more about the traditions of Día de los Muertos here.

‍

Threaded through these traditions is the modern Halloween celebration (taking place Friday, October 31). Halloween finds its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter. For the Celts, this liminal moment represented the thinning of the veil between the living and the spiritual world. To protect their homes and honor ancestors, families lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off wandering spirits. Over centuries, these pagan traditions were absorbed into Christian observances of All Hallows’ Eve and evolved into today’s playful, community-centered festivities. From pumpkin carving in Irish folklore to trick-or-treating in American neighborhoods, Halloween continues to blend imagination, folklore, and collective celebration - transforming ancient rituals into vibrant expressions of creativity and connection. Read more about Halloween’s origins here.

‍

Together, the Mid-Autumn Festival, Diwali, Día de los Muertos, and Halloween remind us that every transition holds beauty; that even as the world shifts from light to shadow, there is warmth to be found in gathering, gratitude, and memory.
